The sudden giveaway of 1,000 bitcoins announced by an anonymous Reddit user who claims to be the Bitfinex attacker is considered either a trolling or money laundry scheme by the majority.

The Reddit user rekcahxfb (which is an anagram of “BFX hacker”) started a trend of Wednesday claiming he would transfer a $580,000 worth of bitcoins to a random address left in a comment.

“One lucky winner will receive 1000 BTC [bitcoins] after one week from now,” he wrote. Nearly 3,000 users have posted their details in the trend.

At the same time, many of commenters are sceptical about the offer, some arguing that the hackers who have stolen around 120,000 bitcoins (more than $73 million) from the Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange have elaborated a sophisticated money laundering scheme to involve innocent users.

“The person who hacked bitfinex is now trying to launder the money…It provides an additional "plausible deniability" to any prosecution. Receiving stolen funds is a lesser crime than hacking, and theft of tens of millions of dollars” wrote Penroze.

“He will declare himself as the winner and will look like a innocent person who won in the lottery. But even if the lottery winner is not the actual thief, he's participating in a illegal activity,” Corelianer, another user said.

“Why not sending 1 BTC to 1000 addresses and ask for a tip. Then you could recover a % as laundered money” wrote acec.

“i very much doubt ill get anything lol will anyone apart from the hacker himself? jesus 10 bitcoin would turn my life around right now let alone a 1000,” ukb90 wrote.

“Obviously he is not going to give them away (or will send it to one of his own accounts to make it look like he did),” Future_Prophecy user said.

“Rich people do strange things to entertain themselves. But it’s most likely an attempt to influence the market,” Reddit user Hayo wrote.

It is worth mentioning, that after the hacker attack, Bitfinex established a margin position for the cryptocurrencies, freezing the prices at the level they were when the attack occurred.

“The theft is being reported to—and we are co-operating with—law enforcement,” Bitfinex said in a blog post. “We are deeply concerned about this issue and we are committing every resource to try to resolve it.”

If 1000 BTC is $58,000 then 1 BTC is $58.
