All trading, deposits and withdrawals are currently suspended on the Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange. Customer funds are reported stolen as a result of a hacker attack.
There are still no reports concerning the exact amount of funds stolen and number of users affected. The exchange states the incident has been reported to law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, the exchange has to halt all operations to carry out investigation procedures.
“We are investigating the breach to determine what happened, but we know that some of our users have had their bitcoins stolen. We are undertaking a review to determine which users have been affected by the breach. While we conduct this initial investigation and secure our environment, bitfinex.com will be taken down and the maintenance page will be left up.”
The official statement emphasises that only bitcoin accounts were targeted by the attackers, other digital tokens traded on the platform left unaffected. The customer losses are promised to be addressed later as the investigation proceeds.
As of now, Bitfinex is the third most popular bitcoin exchange with a day trading volume at nearly 16,000 BTC (about $3.7 mln). Last May, the company warned its customers about possible attack targeting its hot wallet and suggested to stop any deposits for the time of investigation and security procedures. No customer money was allegedly lost in the security breach.
