The head of the popular crypto wallet and trading service Brian Armstrong has stated on Reddit that after ETH, more altcoins may be added to the platform.
Initially a bitcoin-only company, in late July 2016 Coinbase added support for the newly forked version of Ethereum (ETH). Ethereum Classic, however, was left out in the cold, the company only promising “to monitor the situation and evaluate customer demand.” Since then, this is the first hint at further widening the range of traded cryptocurrencies by Coinbase.
Stating his reasons, Armstrong remarked that to him, Ethereum has managed to outperform bitcoin in what concerns its scaling abilities.
“We have now added support for ethereum as well on Coinbase, and may add others. We are looking to support any cryptocurrency that our customers want to use, and my hope is that one of them succeeds massively, reaching billions of people over the coming years. I'm very interested in have digital currency scale, and I agree that ethereum seems to be doing a much better job at this than bitcoin right now. But the future is still unknown.”
Amidst speculations what coin could make it next, in what looks more like a flash mob than a spontaneous reaction, commenters on Reddit have shown overwhelming support for Monero (XMR). The coin sees massive growth over the last month which, according to some traders, may be partly attributed to deliberate pumping on behalf of its supporters. Regardless of this, the coin has gained genuine respect among the bitcoin community due to its unique cryptographic algorithms and the promise to become the first truly anonymous decentralised currency in wide use.
The second nominee is dogecoin – a veteran currency that has been long time overshadowed by its larger counterparts. Yet, this coin has a decent-size user base and can offer some advantages despite its relatively low price and modest daily trade volume.
“If its not volatile, that means its stable, which is a desirable characteristic of money and currency. Dogecoin has a fairly descent android wallet, is proof of work (scrypt), has a wide distribution, the best logo, sponsored a nascar team, and is pretty awesome. i think its at 40 satoshi which is a pretty good deal it was at 240 back in the day. I hope the 5 percent inflation isn't too much and just leaves it undesirable because its perceived lack of scarcity. I don't know, I don't have a ton of it, but I agree with you sentiments and also wish more people would gamble on dogecoin,” user AUAUA is reasoning.
Among other claimants, litecoin and dash were mentioned but failed to draw significant attention so far.
