The Arlington, a 155 year-old Glasgow pub, starts accepting Scotcoin digital currency on St Andrew’s Day.
The pub established in 1860 encourages their customers to pay for their famous “Stone of Destiny” lager in Scottish cryptocurrency, which was introduced in 2013. The pub’s owners claim they want to support Scotcoin, though they do not plan to pay their staff in the digital currency yet.
The name of the lager relates to the local legend that Scottish nationalistic students stole the coronation stone from Westminster Abbey and hid it in The Arlington pub, while celebrating the loot.
Scotcoin is not the only Scottish cryprtocurrency initiative. This autumn the Scottish national party’s George Kerevan, MP, acknowledged that a widely recognised independent Scottish currency was needed and supported the New Economic Fund's ScotPound initiative.
Along with that, the Royal Bank of Scotland is now among the world’s leading banks looking into blockchain technology underpinning digital currencies.
